Dr. Richard Erdlac
Dr. Richard Erdlac is an energy consultant in Midland, Texas. He has degrees in physics and geology from the University of Pittsburgh and The University of Texas at Austin. He began work in the oil and gas industry with Gulf Oil in 1980 as an exploration geophysicist. Initial focus was on the Gulf of Mexico but he was soon transferred to Midland where he has spent much of his oil and gas career active within the Permian Basin. Since then, he has carried out regional oil and gas work for nearly two dozen other companies, both majors and independents. As a structural geologist, Dr. Erdlac has conducted numerous subsurface mapping projects and has also been an active surface mapper in the Trans-Pecos of Texas and in Guatemala. Dr. Erdlac has worked at the University Of Texas Bureau Of Economic Geology in Austin, at a Midland research office of Texas Tech University, Odessa College, and at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Center for Energy and Economic Diversification (UTPB-CEED). He was also co-founder, director, and chairman of the West Texas Earth Resources Institute in Midland. The Institute was originally established to interact with the oil and gas industry to conduct regional energy studies.
Dr. Erdlac began more serious investigations into geothermal energy along with other professional colleagues in 1999 while at the Institute. When Dr. Erdlac later began work at UTPB-CEED as a Research Scientist, where he continued working with geothermal energy with the idea of furthering its development by using deep oil and gas wells, either as coproduced fluids or as reentry into abandoned wells and fields to produce hot brine water as a 'stranded' energy resource. He received grants to continue this energy work from the U.S. Department of Energy, the Texas State Energy Conservation Office, and the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration. The latter grant also looked at solar and wind energy in the West Texas region along with the concept of 'nesting' various energy resources. Dr. Erdlac was also the Director of Energy Research and Commercialization for Energy America and Energy America Inc. in Midland, Texas.
Dr. Erdlac has over 100 publications and presentations involving energy and geologic topics. He has maintained ties with other professionals in the oil, gas, and geothermal industries. He has taught a number of geoscience and oil field related courses throughout his career. He is a member of a number of different geological and professional societies. Finally, Dr. Erdlac is most interested in working to further the development and expansion of geothermal energy because of its importance as a baseload energy resource.
