M. R. Islam is a professor of Petroleum Engineering at the Civil and Resource Engineering Department of Dalhousie University, Canada. During 2000 through early 2005, Dr. Islam held the Killam Research Chair in Petroleum Engineering, which was the only Petroleum Engineering Research Chair in Canada. Prior to this, Dr. Islam was the first NRCan (Natural Resources Canada) professor of engineering at the University of Regina, where he was the program leader of petroleum engineering. He was instrumental in establishing the Petroleum Technology Research Center (PTRC) and the Greenhouse Gas Technology Center (GTC) in Regina. In his 20 years of professional career, Dr. Islam has written over 700 research articles on various modeling, petroleum, environmental, and communication related topics. During the same period, he received more than 20 million dollars in institutional and over 10 million dollars in individual research grants, and employed over 150 post-doctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate research students. In recognition of his research and teaching excellence, he has received a number of international awards, including Einstein Gold Medal of Honor, Kapitsa Gold Medal, and Crown and Eagle Gold Medal for all of which Dr. Islam is the first recipient in Canada. He taught virtually all petroleum engineering courses, ranging from drilling engineering to reservoir engineering and improved oil recovery. He gave numerous invited speeches and some dozen workshops and short courses in many countries. At present, he employs dozens of post-doc, PhD and MASc students, and research associates. He recently published six books (three best sellers) on the topic of reservoir simulation (Gulf Publishing), sustainable technology development and resource management (Nova Science Publisher), Knowledge economics (Nova Science Publishers), sustainable petroleum operations (Gulf Publishing), greening of petroleum operations (Elsevier), and advanced computational techniques (Gulf Publishing), and has completed several more books on a wide range of topics. His current projects involve the development of the world’s first Virtual Research University, realtime reservoir management tool, productive expert system, downhole refinery, imaging while drilling, in situ 3D ultrasonography and relative permeameter, zero-waste petroleum production, closed loop drilling systems, laser drilling of petroleum wells, new economic theories and energy policy models, and novel materials and techniques. These projects are funded by a number of industry and government sponsors from different countries.

Dr. Islam is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nature Science and Sustainable Technology, is a primary editor for Advances in Sustainable Petroleum Engineering and Science, Journal of Characterization and Development of Novel Materials, and Journal of Information, Intelligence, and Knowledge. He also serves on the editorial boards of a number of international journals. In the past, he served on the Editorial Board of SPE Reservoir Engineering (technical editor), J Petroleum Science and Engineering (associate editor), J Canadian Petroleum Technology, AIChE J (EOR Monograph editor), and others. He has been an active member of a number of international societies, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Dr. Islam is a director of Emertec Research and Development Ltd. and has been on the Board of a number of companies in North America and overseas. He has offered short courses around the world on topics, ranging from reservoir engineering to energy pricing.
