Ever since the early days of Machine Learning in the 1950s, the goal has been to learn from data, to gain knowledge from experience and to make predictions. The field was accelerated by the introduction of statistical learning theory in the late 1960s, although at that time it was a purely theoretical analysis of the problem of function estimation from a given collection of data. Machine learning can solve a wide variety of problems in computer vision, including image recognition, object detection and tracking, automatic document analysis, face detection and recognition, computational photography, augmented reality, 3D reconstruction, and medical image processing, to name a few. Recently, rapid developments in advanced computing and imaging systems in biomedical engineering areas have given rise to a new dimension of research, and the increasing size of biomedical data requires precise machine learning-based data mining algorithms.
