Series: Advances in Additive Manufacturing Technologies

Series Editor(s): Bijaya Bikram Samal

Scope: Demands for customization, complex designs, and superior mechanical properties, short product life cycle have driven Additive Manufacturing (AM). The phrase additive manufacturing refers to a variety of methods, including 3D printing, Rapid Prototyping (RP), Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM), Layered Manufacturing, and Additive Fabrication. Additive manufacturing is the process of making a part or component by adding successive layers of material. The advantages of additive manufacturing are that there is low waste of the material, controllability of the material property at individual layers, faster product development etc. The possibilities for using AM are endless. Early applications of AM in the form of RP focused on preproduction visualization models. Recently, AM has been utilized to create end-use goods like airplane parts, dental restorations, medical implants, food items, car components, and fashion items etc.
The main focus of this book series is to provide a scientific platform for researchers, practitioners, professionals, and academicians to discuss the most recent technological developments in Additive Manufacturing. It will cover various aspects of AM through different books which may include but not limited to AM processes, available standards, materials, recent developments in AM technologies, 4D printing, AM in Industry 4.0, AM applications, future possibilities in AM, etc.

About the Series Editor(s):
Bijaya Bikram Samal is a senior researcher in the Direct Digital Manufacturing Lab, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. He has been doing research in the field of 4D printing for the last 6 years and is considered the first person in India to have started research in the field of 4D printing technology. In 2018, he became the first person in the world to have created the strongest 4D printed part. His experimental work on nature-inspired 4D printing is published as a chapter in the book Advances in Additive Manufacturing (Elsevier). At the 4D Materials Design and Additive Manufacturing Conference 2022 conducted by the 4D printing society, he presented the results of his study on material programming in 4D printing. Both the 9th Annual National Conference on Advanced Technologies and Research in Understanding Medicine at Sastra Deemed University in India and the International Conference on 4D Printing and Meta Materials in the Netherlands had invited him to deliver a plenary talk on his research on 4D printing. He won the best research paper award at the International Conference on Futuristic Research in Engineering Smart Materials, hosted by the CMR Institute of Technology in India and the Gyeongsang National University, South Korea. He was awarded by the Honourable Chief Minister of Odisha, India for his innovation in 2018 on fabricating a heat engine that was able to produce electricity from hot spring and subsequently got a start-up incubation and grant from Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar.
